The Cigacice case is probably the most "famous" part of the Oderstellung. Anyhow the most visited works are only the bunkers between road bridges in Lena Góra. I personally believe that itīs a pity, because there are far more interesting pillboxes in the second line and in the forest parts on both wings of the area Cigacice.
Cigacice is situated 15 km northwards from Zielona Góra. The primary goal was a defense of the road bridge joining Cigacice and Lena Góra. In the postwar period there was built a new road bridge 500m eastwards from the high-road E65, thanks to which there disappeared two pillboxes of the Oderstellung that were situated in its line. But there is no side cut from this high-road leading to tha territory of Lena Góra! In this area the most known bunkers are the Nr. 708, the 711 and the 712. All of them occur between the road bridges. As the first there appears the Nr. 712, situated close to the old bridge. The only grist was to observe the surroundings with a armoured observation cupola 9P7. In front of the flood-protection band there is placed a bilateral pillbox for two heavy machine-guns. Itīs ousted of the main armoures and afloated. On walls there are preserved many writings, on the concrete bases there there are remains of ramps-carriers for machine-guns. The last pillbox is the Nr. 708, where evolves a museum during the last years. Itīs also a bilateral work intended for enfilades of two heavy machine-guns situated in nontype armour-plates with proportions 280 x 180 x 8 cm.
500 - 800 metres distant from the first line there occur other works (the Nr. 697, the 698, the 702, the 710, the 724). In two cases they are shelters, the others are designed for direct fire of two heavy machine-guns. In two cases there were placed extra armoured observation cupolas 9P7.
Nr. 697 - designed for the direct fire of two heavy machine-guns situated in an armour-plate 7P7. An armoured cupola 9P7 served for observation. The whole entrance part of the bunker has been blown up, only shooting rooms with parts of armour-plates are preserved. The ceiling beam in the area of the armoured cupola has been launched up into the air and has fallen upside down on its original place. Consenquently it is possible to find the cupola inside the room originally designed for it, the entrance is in the right shooting room. Nr. 698 - a fully preserved shelter for launching force. It disposes of two entrances leading into a shared hall that is guarded by two embrasures. There could the crew leave its equipment used in field defence. The armoured door leads into the only room of the pillbox that served as personnel quarters. Nr. 702 - probably the most beatiful pillbox of the whole line. It is intended for the direct fire of two heavy machine-guns placed in armour-plates 7P7. There are two entrances. The space in front of them was protected by a weapon in the embrasure under the concrete. From the entrance room there leads an emergency exit, the space is guarded by two defence gunports. Futher there is a large room that served as quarters of the crew. There are two armoured ports leading into two shooting rooms. The entries differ from each other- while the left one is traditionally opening, the right one is multifolding. Inside there is preserved a number of signs, on the ceiling beam occur anti-personnel obstacles, alongside there are remnants of a funnel. The interior is treated, the armoured parts are gradually coated, also the surrounding is devoided of shrubs. Nr. 710 - personnel shelter, which has only one entrance. It has no defence gunports. From small entrance room leads another armour-door direct into the quarters. In its back-wall there is an emergency exit. The pillbox is treated and partially uncovered. It should be a part of the nature trail along the Oderstellung in the future. Nr. 724 - also very interesting pillbox, unfortunatelly it is jotted by the "collecters of scrap", who cut out a part of the armour-plate 7P7 round the gunport and the observational port . The armament formed two heavy machine-guns situated in two armour-plates 7P7 designed for direct fire. The armoured observational cupola 9P7, placed between both shooting rooms, enlarged the possibility of observation.
If we returned on the flood-protection bank itself, we could continue in the exploration on both sides of the Oder river. Especially for a cycle-trip it is convenient to go up the river along the way that leads right along the bank. Although the overwhelmed works Nr. 707, 706 and 705 in the first part of the lap, there follows forward shelter Nr. 703 in front of the flood-protection bank, in its surroundings there are preserved many ditches. A few tens of metres away there are three little bunkers Nr. 699, 700 and 701. Althoug their entrance parts are overwhelmed and the front parts are also, esp. in summer months, badly visible, it is possible to find here armour-plates 7P7 and an observational cupola 9P7. Further the line leaves the bank and copies the river in a little underflooded terrain, so itīs more convenient to continue the way along the bank itself. After cca two km the line goes back and you can see there many a number of bunkers armed with one or two heavy machine-guns and disposing of observational cupolas 9P7. Unfortunately all entrances except one of them ( which was flooded) are overwhelmed. We liked esp. one fully preserved pillbox for two heavy machine-guns in two armour-plates 7P7 with an observational cupola 9P7 and with a wonderful view of the Oder river. Moreover, by looking inside through one of the loop holes, we found out that the work is fully dry! Out of the combat blocks we found there also one preserved shelter and groundings for an armoured observational tower (in the Oderstellung there have been built only a few ones, none of them have preserved).
Then our attention turned to the area of Cigacice - Pomorsko. By the road bridge in Lena Góra the best way is to turn left and to continue behind the flood-protecting bank to a farm. We focused on the following works there: Nr. 721 - in literature itīs a relatively often mentioned pillbox situated in a bend of the flood-protecting bank behind the farm. Itīs a variant of the strongest work of the Oderstellung. Itīs main armament is placed in an armoured cupola 3P7. Because of the reduced possibility of observation there was positioned an extra observational cupola 9P7 on the ceiling beam of the work. Unfortunately this is the only visible part of the pillbox today, the other parts is overwhelmed with spoil. Perhaps this fact could be seen from the opposite corner, so thank God, because currently the armoured parts of the whole Oderstellung are disappearing with a breakneck speed and are being sold to scrap yards. The most known case of this year is the steal ( cutting off with an autogenous cutting machine) right of the armoured cupola 3aP7 from the work not far from Mielnik. Nr. 722 - a little bit scrubby and in the territory of a private land. Its main armament formed a heavy machine-gun that, from the armour-plate 7P7, raked the area behind the flood-protecting bank. Except the armour-plate itself, which is cut off in the area of the gunport and the observational cupola, the pillbox has preserved in a relatively good condition. Nr. 726 - situated 600m behind the first line. This work rakes with its heavy machine-gun large meadows behind the flood-protection bank. It occures in the end of the forest, surrounded by a number of lakes that complicate the access. Itīs relatively debased by a detonation in the area of quarters and entrances. Though in the shooting room there has preserved an armour-plate 7P7. Nr. 728 - a shelter situated 200m behind the flood-protection bank. Itīs mostly overwhelmed with spoil and the interior is flooded. Nr. 730 - another shelter that occurs this time right behind the flood-protection bank in the end of the forest, 500m far from the farm. Also this one is fully flooded. Nr. 731 - a little bunker operating with the enfilade of one heavy machine-gun up the river (outlied in front of the flood-protection bank). It lacks the embrasure for defence of the entrance. Through the armoured door you enter a little entrance hall, where there the other door leads direct into the shooting room, which served also as quarters for the crew. The heavy machine-gun was fixed in a sledge carriage on a concrete table behind the armour-plate 7P7, which has preserved to this day. The compactibility of the pillbox wasnīt corrupted by the detonation in the area of the hall that has lifted off the whole ceiling beam by a few centimetres. Nr. 732 - by a detonation damaged pillbox for one heavy machine-gun with an observational cupola 9P7, situated right on the bank of the river. Only the entrance part and quarters preserved. The shooting room and the room with the cupola were destroyed by the detonation. Nr. 733 - a preserved shelter for a launching force, forward in front of the flood-protection bank, fully cast with water. Nr. 734 - a relatively large bilateral pillbox designed for the enfilade of two heavy machine-guns placed in two armour-plates 7P7. The observation was facilitated by the cupola 9P7. Two entrances lead into a shared hall guarded by two small gunports. From the hall you can enter the relatively large quarters. In its left corner there is an emergency exit. Two ports at the sides front into the shooting rooms. In the right one of them there is door to a little room under the observational cupola. Its blasting off in the postwar period destroyed only the ceiling beam that allows to make a perfect picture of the scheme of the bunker today. Moreover the armoured parts have preserved for many years here. However in the time of our visit there was only a half of the armou-plate 7P7. The observational cupola disappeared irrevocably
Nr. 735 - occurs at the doorstep of the river and of some car park for anglers. This fact caused that there is a waste site inside the bunker. Itīs a bilateral pillbox intended for the fire of two heavy machine-guns in armour-plates 7P7. Itīs badly damaged by a detonation, only in the left part of the shooting room there has preserved a part of the armour-plate. Nr. 736 - a preserved shelter, in part cast with water. At the same time it is the last work that we managed to find there in a compact condition. Its neighbour Nr. 737 wasnīt so lucky and is completely destroyed.
